Thickness planer

Understanding why thickness planers often cut too deeply at the beginning and end of a board probably isn't as much fun as sending a young'un out on an old fashioned snipe hunt, but it might be more satisfying in the long run because there really is such a thing as planer snipe trust me!

Snipe occurs mostly at the infeed end of a planed board and usually to a lesser extent at the outfeed end. The board is cut too deeply for the first few inches, then abruptly ramps up to nominal thickness and stays there until the last few inches. Now, this might sound too obvious to be worth mentioning, but stick with me: the planer's cutterhead isn't somehow moving itself perversely closer to the bed at each end of a board because it wants to torment you.

Instead, the wood must be moving itself closer to the cutterhead in order to get cut too deeply. You've probably noticed that snipe always stops after a few inches when the planer's second feed roller comes to bear on the wood, pushing it down firmly onto the bed to maintain consistent thickness.

Controlling snipe, then, requires nothing more complicated than keeping the stock firmly on the planer bed at the beginning and end of the cut. A couple of marketing departments out there want you to believe that a cutterhead height lock will prevent snipe, but they're just whistling in the dark. Such a claim makes the bizarre assumption that the cutterhead would flop around randomly unless locked—an unusual design feature, to say the least.

Why would wood lift itself into the cutterhead whenever only one feed roller is holding it down? No, the wood doesn't want to torment you any more than the cutterhead does.

Simple leverage accounts for the phenomenon at least as well as the malevolence of the inanimate. If you do not fully support a board moving into or out of your planer, the free end drops, lifting the other end as it passes beneath the cutterhead.

thickness planer

This lifting force is compounded by the action of the planer knives. As they sweep through a cut they contact wood only through the forward part of their arc, imparting back pressure and lift. Thus passive horizontal board support may not suffice; you need actively to counter the cutterhead's lifting force as well.

There's an old saying for this situation: fight leverage with leverage. As you start a pass through the planer, lift the trailing end of the board with a few pounds more force than its weight while pressing the leading end firmly onto the planer bed.

Force the wood to stay flat and firm on the bed until the second feed roller takes over the hold-down job, and then continue to support the board's weight until it's close to balanced. Move to the outfeed side and repeat the process to complete the pass: apply just a little positive lift under the lead end and press the trailing end flat as it rolls out from under the infeed roller.

With a little practice, you can reduce snipe to a mere burnish mark that can be scraped or sanded out in a few seconds, with no need to sacrifice valuable board footage. Perhaps a planer with two infeed rollers, two outfeed rollers and eight foot in and outfeed tables could eliminate snipe for you.

Until somebody builds such a thing, and until you're ready to pay for it, try controlling the wood yourself. It works—trust me!Wen t Motor is strong and runs well. This posting is for a dewalt thickness planer. Thickness planer NEW, Unused. No owner markings.

Since these machines are very handy, you can think of the best wood planers as an investment. With so many brands and models available, you need all the information you can get to make a wise choice. Before you choose a wood planer, you need to know what thickness you need. Usually, electric planers have a capacity of 6-inches, but there are other machines available with a higher thickness.

Also, most models come with a depth stop so you can adjust the machine to the width you commonly use. The maximum width that a planer can handle is its width capacity. Again, choose the wood planer according to what you need. Normally though, wood planers have a capacity ranging from inches.

This is the next feature to look out for when choosing the best wood planer to suit your needs and preferences. When it comes to wood planers, they can have 2, 3 or 5 knives on the cutterhead. If the machine has more blades and a faster speed, it will deliver more strokes.

This, in turn, will provide you with a more refined and smoother finish. There are different types of wood planers available, and they each have their own distinct purpose.

They have advantages over others and their drawbacks as well. Efficient This is one of the best wood planers available because of its power and efficiency. With this planer, changing blades is an easy task.

This is a powerful planer which can handle wider materials easily. With this machine, you can handle various projects from doors, furniture, customized millwork, and more.

Powerful This thickness planer comes with a powerful motor and a cutterhead with 3 knives.A thickness planer also known in the UK and Australia as a thicknesser or in North America as a planer is a woodworking machine to trim boards to a consistent thickness throughout their length and flat on both surfaces.

A thickness planer is a woodworking machine to trim boards to a consistent thickness throughout their length and flat on both surfaces.

It is different from a surface planer, or jointerwhere the cutter head is set into the bed surface. A surface planer has slight advantages for producing the first flat surface and may be able to do so in a single pass.

However the thicknesser has more important advantages in that it can produce a board with a consistent thickness, avoids producing a tapered board, and by making passes on each side and turning the board, may also be used for the initial preparation of an unplanned board.

A thickness planer consists of three elements: a cutter head which contains the cutting knives; a set of rollers which draw the board through the machine; and a table which is adjustable relative to the cutter head to control the resultant thickness of the board.

Industrial thickness planers are capable of accepting very wide boards and removing large amounts of material in a single pass. These machines are driven by powerful motors and are of very heavy construction. In recent times, a range of lightweight portable thickness planers have become available which use the cheaper, but noisy, universal motors rather than induction motors and are much less expensive than industrial versions.

In Europe, the functions of the jointer and thickness planer are often combined into a single combination machinea jointer-planer.

In the U. In operation, the table is set to the desired height and then the machine is switched on. The board is fed into the machine until it makes contact with the in-feed roller which grips the board and draws it into the machine and past the rotating cutter head. The knives remove material on the way through and the out-feed roller pulls the board through and ejects it from the machine at the end of the pass. To finish a board that is flat and of uniform thickness along its length, it is necessary to start with a board that has at least one perfectly flat reference face.

The board is fed with this reference face flat on the table and the cutter head removes an amount of material from the opposite face so that it is made parallel to the reference face. The reference face is often created by first passing the board over a jointer.

If the lower face is not flat, the feed roller pressure pressing the board against the table will deform the board, which will then spring back as it leaves the machine, resulting in a non-flat upper surface.

One problem often encountered when using a thickness planer is snipe. This manifests as a deeper cut on a short section of the board at either end and is caused by incorrect feeding or misalignment of the in-feed or out-feed tables, or an unnecessarily high setting of the rollers recessed in the surface of the in-feed table.

It can be accommodated by keeping the board overlong to allow later trimming. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Department for Education and Child Development. The 10 Best Wood Planers to Buy 2020

There are many brands and manufacturers of thickness planers today, each with its own unique set of features. You might ask. The major difference is actually in the accessories that come with them. While the DW consist of the planer unit and nothing else.

When talking about benchtop planers, we believe the Dewalt DWX sets the standard in terms of overall design and performance. A good planer has to be able to generate enough power to cut cleanly through both hard and soft wood without experiencing any strain in the motor, and without damaging the wood in any way in the form of snipe or tearout.

The Dewalt DWX performs so well in these aspects.

thickness planer

In terms of power, the DW leaves nothing in its path. It features a powerful 15 amps motor which turns at a speed of 20, rpm while also spinning the cutterhead at a speed of 10, rpm, enabling it to plane any kind of wood efficiently without strain on the motor. The cutterhead itself consists of three knives which have a decent lifespan and they can easily be replaced with the extra set of knives included in the package, in case they get dull. The Dewalt DWX features a 2 speed gear box system which is probably one of the most useful features of the planer.

Either of these speeds either raises or lowers the speed of the rollers. If you want to take out a lot of material, i. Then you have to use the dimensioning speed 96 CPI. On the other hand, if you just want to create a smooth surface on the board, then you can use the finishing cut which is CPI.

The planer features a peculiar height adjustment crank that helps to raise and lower the cutterhead and rollers assembly. The height adjustment is peculiar because it does not require a lockdown after cranking it upwards or downwards. Most benchtop planers require that lockdown to prevent the wood from pushing the cutterhead and roller assembly back up. It just stays in the same position, until you raise it or lower it again, which is really cool.

thickness planer

Another important feature is the turret depth stop. The depth stop helps to prevent that from happening. All you have to do is set the depth stop to that thickness, and you will not be able to crank the planer height adjustment below that depth.
